Model Profile Shan Yi Shanghai, China
Shan Yi is a model from Liaoning province northeastern China, bordering on North Korea and the Yellow Sea. Street Style Planet Earth caught up with her during Shanghai Fashion Week where she walked her seventh season.
"I have always been interested in painting and The Arts, and soon this developed into fashion and my dream was to become a model."
At 19, along with the help of a friend who was learning photography, Shan began to post self-styled shoots on line. The images soon caught the attention of fashion scouts and she was approached by the Beijing based model agency Esee to come for an interview. Signed up on the spot, Shan moved to Beijing alone.
"I was very independent from an early age so the move didn't seem daunting, it was the start of an adventure."
My family initially had a big misunderstanding of modelling
My family initially had a big misunderstanding of modelling, but now they are very supportive of my career. I feel that in pursuing my dream job that my dedication has won over the support and understanding of my family.
"I worked for 2 years in Beijing then moved to Shanghai. Shoots in Shanghai seem more fun but most magazines are based in Beijing."
Her first runway job was for the brand Lalabobo during the Beijing based Mercedes-Benz China Fashion Week where after her show debut she was asked to model for the brand's campaign shoot.
"When I stepped into the industry, I found it more interesting but also harder than I ever expected"
"I've never felt nervous about walking shows or shooting, I find the whole process interesting and I try to understand the roles of the different team members in the production."
“My hope for the forthcoming seasons is to work abroad. I’m yet to work overseas but one day I hope that I will be able to go to more countries to work for more interesting brands. "
